Following the performance will be a Q&A with Laura Vitale and Rick Moody.

Laura Vitale / We Are Your Friends with Paul Geluso present A Capella Space Station: an evening of surround sound installation and performance in which ISSUE Project Room transmogrifies into a space ship environment constructed from the human voice and other human things. Laura Vitale works with a focus on sound in a variety of media, with performance and installation, and often in collaboration. Laura is in her second and final year of graduate school in Kinetic Imaging at Virginia Commonwealth University. She has made commissioned sound installations for WNYC, been a Van Lier Fellow at Harvestorks Digital Media Arts Center, and received a New York State Council on the Arts Individual Artist Grant. She will make a New Programming commission for Triple Canopy and occupy Recess Session's SoHo project space in 2012.

We Are Your Friends is a collaborative, community-based choral project founded in 2009 by Laura Vitale and writer/musician Rick Moody. Membership is open to anyone who wants to join and shows up. We Are Your Friends specializes in untrained voices and extended vocal technique, and its particular interest is in rendering electronica and space-themed music in live and unaccompanied settings. We Are Your Friends is presently at work on its first album, a full-length cover of COMPUTER WORLD by the Beatles of the electronic music world, Germany's own Kraftwerk.

This concert will include We Are Your Friends members: Tara Ahmadinejad, Aaron Bornstein, Siobhan Burke, Jean Coleman, Srikalima Harvey, Rick Moody, Juri Onuki, Christo Sims, Tullah Sutcliffe, Lucy Ross, Laura Vitale, Rebecca Warner, Jamie Wilber, and Jeff Wood.

Paul Geluso’s work focuses on the theoretical, practical and artistic aspects of sound recording and reproduction. He is a sound recordist, mixer, and engineer who collaborates with musicians and media artists using sound as a creative medium.

Rick Moody is the author of ten books, including THE ICE STORM, PURPLE AMERICA, and THE FOUR FINGERS OF DEATH. He plays music in The Wingdale Community Singers, and is a co-founder, with Laura Vitale, of We Are Your Friends.

ISSUE Project Room’s Emerging Artists Commission program is made possible, in part, through generous support from: the Greenwall Foundation; the Suzanne Fiol Memorial Fund; Meet the Composer; the Foundation for Contemporary Arts; with public funds from the New York State Council on the Arts, a state agency; and by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council.
