Florian Hecker makes radical computer music that takes full advantage of the computer’s capacity for both refinement and randomization. The German artist’s sounds are cerebral and his processes are complex, so much so that he that he earned a high-profile residency in the media lab at MIT. But the effects he engenders are also wowing and visceral in ways that the lay listener can understand, or at least come to appreciate as a harbinger of a true “future music” that makes good on its rhetorical pretense. For a special project titled “The Non-Trivial Goat and the Cliffs of the Universal,” to be performed in a live experiment here, Mr. Hecker has teamed with Reza Negarestani, an Iranian philosopher and writer whose self-styled “theory-fiction” (in works like “Cyclonopedia”) takes an avant-garde approach to the possibilities of studiousness and the elements of style.
