Thursday, July 22nd, ISSUE Project Room and AvanTokyo present the debut collaboration of Berlin-based composer & musician Rashad Becker and Japanese sound artist Fuji||||||||||ta. The duo’s debut “not to be or not not to be,” will stream on ISSUE’s site. In their words it is “a scrapbook of sensitivities in scarcity of acumen (a tiny cycle of 8 visual scores for supervised soliloquy).” The video aspects of Rashad's scores were conceived in collaboration with video artist Krzysztof Honowski. The commissioned work, part of ISSUE's Distant Pairs series, will also be presented to Japanese audiences on Saturday, July 24th 8pm Japan Standard Time (7am ET).

7月22日(木)ISSUE Project RoomとAvanTokyoは、ベルリンを拠点とする作曲家・音楽家のRashad Beckerと日本のサウンドアーティストFuji||||||||||taの初のコラボレーション作品「not to be or not not to be」を、ISSUEのサイトでストリーミング配信にて発表します。

Although Rashad is mainly active as a solo artist, with recent releases such as the cycle Traditional Music Of Notional Species released across two volumes on PAN, and the multi-part work Based On A True Story, he has maintained a series of permanent collaborations alongside Eli Keszler, Moritz von Oswald, and as a member of the formation Moleglove. Other and more sporadic collaborators have been Okkyung Lee, Andre Vida, Ashley Paul, and Valerio Tricoli. Since 2006, Fuji||||||||||ta has a similarly expansive history of solo performances and collaborative works with musicians, such as ∈Y∋ (Boredoms), Akio Suzuki, Keiji Haino, Koichi Makigami and more. In 2020, he released the albums “iki” [Hallow Ground] and “KŌMORI” [Boomkat Editions].

During the Summer 2021, ISSUE is commissioning artists to produce collaborative work at a time when the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has drastically impacted their ability to travel and perform, and altered the nature of collective work and performance. Pairing artists in disparate locations who cannot work together in “traditional” ways, the Distant Pairs series examines the collaborative process, methods of working, and partnership amidst these constrained conditions.

Notes from Rashad Becker & Fuji||||||||||ta on “not to be or not not to be”

not to be or not not to be
a scrapbook of sensitivities in scarcity of acumen
(a tiny cycle of 8 visual scores for supervised soliloquy)

everything is
there is nothing that is not
there is not nothing that is not not
everything is anything because it is not nothing
there is not anything that is not not nothing
not anything is something because it is not not nothing
anything is something because it is everything not
anything is fine because something is not
why is there not nothing instead of nothing
not not communicating is an option not
colloquy is not not monology not
choice is an experience not unless erasure
not to be or not not to be, that’s the question.

FUJI||||||||||TA is a Sound Artist living in Japan. He creates his unique sound art and music which takes various natural phenomena that respond to his interest in wanting to hear unheard sounds and noises. In 2009 Fujita hand fabricated an original instrument, a Pipe Organ. It has only 11 pipes and no keyboard. Fujita made it with his own imagination, without any specialized knowledge. It was designed to create a landscape rather than function as a musical instrument. He got the idea from Japanese “gagaku.” The air pump (called “FUIGO”) which is kept moving with the left hand when playing, is based on an ancient blacksmith’s. There is only one instrument in the world, so there is no way to play at first. So he had to take the time to find it. The water element (with sound synthesized water tanks) has recently been added on his performance repertoire. The music consists of water sounds from multiple aquariums alongside his pipe organ, and his voice. He has presented his sound installation works in many contexts : the work “CELL”, which made audible the sounds of black soldier fly maggots buried in dirt, was exhibited in Sapporo International Art Festival 2017 and attracted a great deal of interest in Fujita’s artistic practice. A performance with an organ and 4 water tanks were performed in MODE (London) in 2019.

Offering Japanese artists performance and residency opportunities in New York, AvanTokyo facilitates cultural interactions between Japan and the United States.
