ISSUE Project Room and the Board of Directors invite you to join us for our annual Gala, taking place on Wednesday October 18th, 2017.
Celebrating the trajectory of experimental performance in Brooklyn, and the Borough as a center for innovation in the arts, ISSUE’s 2017 Gala reflects the Organization’s ongoing role as a leading cultural incubator.
The evening honors Brooklyn Borough President Eric L. Adams, the work of pioneering and distinguished composer Éliane Radigue, and artist, NYU Tandon School of Engineering faculty member and ISSUE Board member R. Luke DuBois. The Gala supports the Organization as an essential artistic voice in Brooklyn, New York City and the international experimental arts community.
We welcome our community to ISSUE’s historic Downtown Brooklyn Theater located at 22 Boerum Place for a special evening, including a cocktail reception, a seated three-course dinner, and live multidisciplinary performances in celebration of the honorees contributions to the field of experimental art and significant impact on ISSUE through their advocacy and support.
Éliane Radigue’s honoring at ISSUE’s 2017 Gala follows a deep history with the Organization, including one of the first ever performances at the 22 Boerum Theater. Radigue will be honored, in absentia, with performances by friends and colleagues including David Behrman, Carol Robinson, Nate Wooley, Laetitia Sonami, Phill Niblock, Byron Westbrook, Lori Napoleon plus Special Guests. Radigue has inspired many across the spectrum of ISSUE’s community and remains a vital pioneer whose methods resonate timelessly. On October 20th, ISSUE presents a related public performance of Radigue’s work, including a world premiere alongside additional dedicated presentations. This event is a part of the Moving Sounds Festival; more information here.
Working since the 1950s, French composer Éliane Radigue’s profound impact on extended technique and minimalism has developed in parallel to the widely celebrated careers of minimalist composers in New York City. Still, the artistic trajectory of her work remains largely underexposed and her inherent distinctions from the male-dominated classification of minimalism remains underemphasized. With her first compositions presented in the late 1960s, her work was almost exclusively created on a single synthesizer, the ARP 2500 modular system and tape. Since 2001, she has composed mainly for acoustic instruments. Radigue’s enduring artistic history has often intersected with ISSUE. In 2010, she introduced the New York premiere of her 2009 acoustic composition Naldjorlak. She has also presented her masterpiece Songs of Milarepa, as well the U.S. and World premieres of OCCAM XVI, OCCAM X and OCCAM RIVER III, which were performed by Carol Robinson and Nate Wooley at ISSUE Project Room in 2014. In honor of her of contributions to electronic music and sound art, Radigue was also awarded Prix Ars Electronica’s Golden Nica in Austria in 2006.
Eric L. Adams’ remarkable advocacy and support of ISSUE’s programs and capital renovation reflect an ongoing commitment to community and development in Brooklyn. Elected as Brooklyn Borough President in November 2013, he has worked tirelessly over the past three decades to address a broad range of subjects affecting New Yorkers, from civil rights and public safety to transparency in government and quality of life. Adams believes in the power of connections, bringing together people in need of services with resources that have been long underutilized. The Brooklyn Borough President’s partnership with ISSUE advances the Organization’s mission to provide a platform for a diverse community of experimental artists that fosters innovation and makes a vital artistic contribution to Brooklyn’s cultural vibrancy.
Artist, Director of the Brooklyn Experimental Media Center at NYU Tandon School of Engineering, and ISSUE Board member, R. Luke DuBois has epitomized advocacy for ISSUE through his ardent activism and chairing of the Organization’s Artistic Committee. DuBois’ guidance follows from his prolific and far-reaching creative life -- a body of work spanning interactive sound and video performance, installation, music production, visual art, and cultural critique. He holds a Doctorate in Music Composition from Columbia University, and has lectured, taught and performed worldwide. An active visual and musical collaborator and exhibiting artist, DuBois is also the co-author of Jitter, a software suite developed by San Francisco-based company and music label Cycling '74. DuBois is a true polymath and dynamic creative voice who has served as a crucial mentor and supporter of ISSUE.
