ISSUE Project Room celebrates the 20th Anniversary of its Artists-In-Residence (AIR) program throughout 2026 with performances by current residents and returning alumni. This anniversary season highlights AIRs whose work reflects the ongoing evolution of a much broader community of experimental artists who have helped shape ISSUE for over twenty years.
Saturday, October 24th at 8pm, ISSUE presents a solo performance by Liturgy, the project of Haela Ravenna Hunt-Hendrix (2012 AIR) at the organization’s 22 Boerum Pl. theater.
Hunt-Hendrix has maintained an ongoing relationship with ISSUE through performances, commissions, and new work developed over the past decade. Following her residency, she returned in 2014 to participate in Georgia Sagri’s (2014 AIR) Daily Bread exhibition, and in 2021 to premiere A Spark of Haelegen (Ave Maria) as part of ISSUE’s online commission series With Womens Work. In 2022 Hunt-Hendrix also produced a limited edition mixtape for ISSUE members, featuring a philosophical reading of the libretto for Liturgy's Origin of the Alimonies laid over source material from her fourth album, H.A.Q.Q.
For this anniversary season, Hunt-Hendrix presents a limited capacity solo program for looped electric guitar, voice, electronics, and piano. Drawing from the Liturgy oeuvre — extensively performed throughout Asia and Latin America over the past year — the evening also features new compositions presented at ISSUE for the first time.
Traversing post-romantic sturm und drang, minimalist overtone worship with phasing sequences, and heartfelt, voice-driven song, Hunt-Hendrix continues an exploration of sound as psychedelic tapestry. With an eye towards black metal as a musical language as well as a cultural and philosophical form, this performance is an attempt, in Hunt-Hendrix's words, to “call heaven down to earth.”

Liturgy is the project of Haela Ravenna Hunt-Hendrix, which has existed for 20 years at the intersection of art rock, extreme metal, avant-classical, philosophy and fine art. In addition to six influential and often controversial full-length albums, Hunt-Hendrix has produced a film, an opera for metal band and chamber orchestra, several sculpture exhibitions and several noted philosophical and theological texts. From 2009’s essay “Transcendental Black Metal: A Vision of Apocalyptic Humanism” to 2023’s 90-minute album 93696, the project has had a variety of lineups and formations over the years.
