Artists-In-Residence 2014

-

ISSUE Project Room is pleased to announce the selection of our 2014 Artists-in-Residence: Raul De Nieves, Moriah Evans, Peter Evans, Georgia Sagri, and Gillian Walsh.

ISSUE Project Room’s Artist-in-Residence program, founded by Suzanne Fiol, has provided a support structure for New York-based musical ensembles, composers, choreographers and sound artists since 2005. Providing artists with access to ISSUE’s facilities, equipment, pr/marketing, curatorial and technical expertise, the AIR program offers artists an opportunity to develop significant new works in partnership with ISSUE over the course of the year, cultivating long-term relationships within the organization and greater cultural community. Artists are given a stipend to support a series of events occurring throughout the 2014 calendar year.

Multimedia artist Raul De Nieves creates a new theatrical work crossing dance, music, and surrealistic sets featuring performer Colin Self. His series of performances and installations also includes an evening of shape-shifting pop operetta from his trio HARIBO. De Nieves combines an emphasis on hand-made craftsmanship and creative uses of (dys)functional language in his explorations of excess and identity. His body of work encompasses narrative painting, decadent multimedia performance, large-scale figurative sculpture, live music, and ornamental self-crafted shoes and garments to engage his audience. His personal mythology ranges in scope and complexity in the form of childish tantrum or cosmic interplays of manifestation and dissolution.

Choreographer Moriah Evans develops a new dance piece, investigating a series of patterns that bisect the body and travel through space and expressive states. Evans’ choreographic work has been presented at Danspace Project, DAP at the Kitchen, MR at Judson Church, AUNTS, BAX, DNA, THROW at The Chocolate Factory, Dixon Place, CalIT2, and Theatre de l’Usine. She is the Editor-in-Chief of the Performance Journal and has been involved with the publication since 2009. During her 2011-2013 artist residency at Movement Research, she initiated The Bureau for the Future of Choreography.

Trumpet player and composer Peter Evans composes a new evening-length set of music for his electro-acoustic Quintet, framed by two solo trumpet concerts-- a format Evans has been exploring for over a decade. Working across a wide spectrum of contemporary music practices, since moving to New York in 2003 Evans has established several small ensembles (Quintet and Zebulon Trio), formed collaborative groups with other composers and improvisers (Pulverize the Sound, Rocket Science) and performed music by both new and established composers. As a trumpet player, Evans has been steadily working to broaden the expressive vocabulary of the instrument for both solo and group contexts. In 2011 he established his More is More label and has released several recordings of his music.

Artist Georgia Sagri presents Daily Bread, an exhibition streamed online for two weeks and a series of both public and private performances, conveying states of loss, mourning and offering. Born in Athens, Greece in 1979, Sagri studied at the National Music School of Athens, holds BFA from Athens School of Fine Arts, and MFAs from Columbia University, New York. At the center of her practice lies the exploration of performance as an ever-evolving field within social and visual life, interconnected, though distinct from the dialectics of representation in theatre, music and dance. Sagri’s work has been shown internationally in public institutions, including the Kunsthalle Basel, Basel (2014), Biennale de Lyon (2013), ProBio, Expo 1: New York, MoMA PS1, New York (2013) and the Whitney Biennial, Whitney Museum of American Art, New York (2011).

Choreographer Gillian Walsh develops a new work continuing her research in coding, scoring and dance as non fiction form. Walsh’s work has most recently been presented at Abrons Arts Center as part of Festival TBD: Emergency Glitter. She has recently had the pleasure of working with luciana achugar, Adrienne Truscott, and Laurie Berg, among other artists.

Established in 2006, ISSUE's annual Artist-in-Residence program provides 5 emerging artists each with a year-long residency including rehearsal space, production, curatorial, and pr/marketing support to create new works, reach the next stage in their artistic development, and gain exposure to a broad public audience.

ISSUE’s Artist-in-Residence program is made possible, in part, through generous support from the Jerome Foundation, with public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council, and with the support of the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature.
