ISSUE Project Room 2024 Gala - Sold Out!

22 Boerum Place, Brooklyn 11201

ISSUE Project Room is delighted to honor the renowned performance & visual artist Jo Andres at our 2024 Gala taking place on Wednesday, October 9th at the organization’s 22 Boerum Pl. theater. This year’s Gala recognizes Jo on the heels of Jo Andres: Before Your Eyes - a solo exhibition spanning 40 years, presented by SPRING/BREAK Art Show promoting the first expansive exhibition of the artist’s work, including ISSUE’S co-presentation of the Liquid TV Salon. Jo stalwartly supported ISSUE since the organization’s early days in the East Village, and was a longtime friend and ally to ISSUE’s founder Suzanne Fiol. Alongside her husband and long-standing ISSUE Board Member Steve Buscemi, the brilliant artist, filmmaker, choreographer and member of ISSUE’s Artistic Advisory Council crucially advocated for the organization as it grew and established itself in Brooklyn. ISSUE remains truly grateful for her ardent commitment to experimental art, and for her belief in the organization as “the pulse of the culture.”

SUPPORT

ISSUE Project Room's 2024 Gala is at capacity. Please consider making a tax-deductible contribution. A gift of any size helps to support our programs and community of underserved artists.

The evening includes a pre-concert cocktail reception with catering from Pixie Scout, beverages from Threes Brewing, Slope Cellars & Topo Chico, plus desserts from EventfullNYC.

The Gala concert features presentations by: Laurie Berg, Steve Buscemi, Sara Driver, Neil Greenberg, Paul Hamilton, Mimi Goese, Axine M, Katie Porter, Hahn Rowe, Lucy Sexton, Elliott Sharp, Kate Valk, and a one-night only presentation from Holobiont Ensemble plus a video tribute from IONE.

Co-curated by Laurie Berg, ISSUE’s 2024 Gala includes offerings from friends, collaborators, and artists deeply influenced by Jo Andres. Mimi Goese, Hahn Rowe & Elliott Sharp will assemble as the Gala house band "Holobiont Ensemble," performing in different configurations with special guests, including several 2024 Artists-In-Residence. In addition to the presentation of rarely seen installations, the evening will feature a duet of Jo's work from dance legends Neil Greenberg & Paul Hamilton. Guests will be greeted by artwork and media from Jo’s archive, including Liquid Tara and never before seen documentation of a 1985 performance of Pantar Paradox at famed East Village Club 8BC. Ticketed guests will also receive a special Gala gift bag housed in a unique cyanotype-blue ISSUE tote.

ISSUE’s Gala is an opportunity to recognize important figures in the experimental arts community and serves as a critical fundraising initiative towards ongoing commissions, international artist appearances, residencies, and premieres. The evening reinforces the organization’s investment in underrepresented artists, while continuing to develop new ways of supporting experimental work.

Jo Andres (1954-2019) first became known on the kinetic downtown New York performance scene of the 1980s for her film/dance/light performances. Her works were shown at the reigning venues of the era, among them The Performing Garage, La Mama E.T.C., P.S. 122, St. Marks Danspace, and the Collective for Living Cinema. Black Kites, Andres’ 1996 award-winning film, aired on PBS, RAI Italian TV and screened in Sundance, Berlin, Toronto, London and Human Rights Watch Film Festivals. Andres directed music and art videos, as well as her own film performance works. Andres was a dance consultant to the acclaimed Wooster Group. She was an artist in residence at leading universities, museums and art colonies, including Yaddo and The Rockefeller Study Center in Bellagio, Italy.

Jo was extremely important to the founding of ISSUE, and an active member of ISSUE's Board of Directors. She was passionate about supporting artists, and played a pivotal role in the realization of the organization’s mission alongside its founder, Suzanne Fiol. She later joined the Artistic Advisory Council, on which she remains a member ‘In Memoriam.’
