Isolated Field Recording Series: QUALIATIK - SHARDS:PROPRIOCEPTION

ISSUE is pleased to stream SHARDS:PROPRIOCEPTION, a new recording and accompanying visual project by multimedia artist, producer, performer, and engineer QUALIATIK. Intimate and unfiltered, SHARDS offers a respite, a therapeutic escape into what reads as an alternate timeline, a post-COVID-19 landscape that feels empty, explorable, and abandoned.

Isolated Field Recording Series: Shelley Hirsch - Generating Text In Quarantine In Several Parts

This collection of "field recordings" are a view into Hirsch’s multiplicitous at-home practice of generating text. For this recording Hirsch has recorded elements of her current process: improvising text by vocalizing with a multi effects unit as well as speaking/writing with and sans effects in tandem with recordings of Morton Feldman music, specifically Piano With String Quartet (1985), Patterns In A Chromatic Field (1981), and Violin & String Quartet (1985). As a whole, the practice illuminates the various ways of “generating text” across Hirsch’s vocal techniques, unique storytelling, free improvisation, and writing.

Isolated Field Recording Series: Jeremy Toussaint-Baptiste - 9 a.m. (Eternal)

A deeply personal two-part recording, 9 a.m. (Eternal) simultaneously embraces both the inner and outer interiorities of Toussaint-Baptiste’s early morning life in Crown Heights, New York, with mundane practices finding new significance against the neighborhood’s dramatically shifting acoustic and physical landscapes—as boomboxes and soundsystems have turned outward to play from balconies along Eastern Parkway.

Isolated Field Recording Series: Lary 7

ISSUE is pleased to stream a cassette recording from Lary 7, the first project in the Isolated Field Recording Series. The series commissions artists to produce field recordings to be streamed over the course of this challenging and isolated time. Lary has given ISSUE a cassette tape containing a room recording of his “droney tone” piece, an unrepeatable sound and light “rewind” work that hybridizes the worlds of film editing (rewinds) and repurposed light sensor tubes originally intended as synchronizers for photo studio flashbulbs.

Ben Vida: Always Already with Yarn/Wire & Nina Dante

ISSUE presents the NY premiere of Always Already a new commissioned work by Ben Vida performed by renowned quartet Yarn/Wire, vocalist Nina Dante, and Vida himself. The evening also features the ISSUE debut of composer Aaron David Ross (ADR), presenting new compositions from his unreleased Filter Failure.

NOMADIC SIGNALS: Porest

Curatorial Fellow Leyya Tawil presents her first program in the NOMADIC SIGNALS series, featuring the NYC debuts of music & performance outlet Porest & feminist noise reggaeton duo Las Sucias. NOMADIC SIGNALS is a vessel for sonic performance operating in what Tawil refers to as the “diasporic imaginary."

Holland Andrews: Onè

ISSUE Artist-In-Residence Holland Andrews presents Onè, a long-form vocal & clarinet performance focused on ancestral trauma, cathartic experience, and, ultimately, healing. With emotionality at the core of their compositional style, Andrews is known for expansive works which create massive cathedrals of sound.

John McCowen: SOLO CONTRA

John McCowen presents compositions for solo contrabass clarinet for his inaugural performance as an Artist-In-Residence. These works present the concept of the instrument as an acoustic synthesizer. By sustaining multiple sounds simultaneously, the clarinet becomes a harmonic tube where sounds create beating harmonics.

Just The Right Height

Self-taught and independent in its vision and approach, Just The Right Height is an investigation of pop lyricism and idiosyncratic songwriting. Focusing on rhythm stripped of melody, repetition, detailed arrangements, and unique sound sources as her dominant compositional techniques, Hunt intersperses her catalogue with heartfelt, melodic tracks.

Beatriz Ferreyra & Christine Groult

ISSUE welcomes pioneering French composers Beatriz Ferreyra & Christine Groult, presenting collaborative work. Ferreyra and Groult have worked together on multiple performances and releases including Nahash, released in 2015 on the Parisian label trAce.

Beatriz Ferreyra: Improvisation

Beatriz Ferreyra presents an improvisation using a Revox tape recorder, augmented with an analog matrix and a synchronizer box with self-designed variable speed drives. Ferreyra describes the use of the magnetic tape as “very physical, it puts the movement of the body into a direct relationship with the sound that is shaped.”
