2020 ISSUE Artist-In-Residence Holland Andrews presents There You Are, a series of micro-performances taken place over the phone. Andrews will email a work to each participant to be played in an available speaker or sound system in their home while Andrews' then calls them to sing and speak to them.

Moore,” her third program in the NOMADIC SIGNALS series. “Crucial Language” places the work of Kalash (Haifa, Palestine) and Moore (Baltimore, US) in conversation through performance and discussion.

ISSUE streams new collaborative work between London-based pianist and composer Veryan Weston & New York-based experimental saxophonist and composer Ingrid Laubrock—a film “Art and Life in Self-Isolation" reflecting on new working methods.

ISSUE is pleased to stream the debut collaboration between Poughkeepsie-based Joe McPhee and Tokyo-based composer Taku Unami. Despite having never worked together previously, both artists share a similarly liberated approach through their expansive individual discographies and various collaborations.

On September 16th, The Steve Circuit concludes with Walking The Steve Circuit, a video essay by Yuko Otomo and Matt Mottel. They will share their own insight, stories and “astral logick” as they return to the sites featured in each of the six episodic broadcasts. The “subterranean spirit” is alive and in the streets.

ISSUE is pleased to stream a performance from Heroes Are Gang Leaders, literary free jazz ensemble of writers, artists and musicians as a part of the Brooklyn Book Festival. Featuring an expansive fourteen member band, the performance features the full line up as well as multiple embedded solos and ensemble formations.

John McCowen continues his 2020 ISSUE residency with a streamed performance of compositions from his duo with clarinetist Madison Greenstone. The stream includes premieres of new works from the Mundanas book as well as selections from 2018’s Mundanas I-V released by Edition Wandelweiser.

ISSUE is pleased to present Prosody as Messy Measurement Membrane, a new video piece from artist, composer, and 2012 ISSUE Artist-In-Residence Jules Gimbrone. "What is the prosody of the membrane? Instead of putting the measurement in a tool aimed at capturing truth, we listened to the membrane."

ISSUE is pleased to present To the Planetarium, a new long-form recording from writer and musician Derek Baron. The recording is part of the Isolated Field Recording Series, commissioning artists to produce field recordings to be streamed over the course of this challenging and isolated time.

ISSUE is pleased to present Alive In St. Louis, a new recording, video, and “CD” from filmmaker, video artist, musician & performer Andrew Lampert. The piece contains a selection of songs, sounds and noises produced with a guitar, keyboard and electricity, largely captured on Iphone and mostly made alone.

Translating to “from one fragment to another,” D'un fragment à l'autre is a sonic retrospective of “exhumed” fragments from Bergsonist's published body of work and a collaboration with multimedia artist and longtime visual collaborator Greg Zifcak.

ISSUE is pleased to stream SHARDS:PROPRIOCEPTION, a new recording and accompanying visual project by multimedia artist, producer, performer, and engineer QUALIATIK. The piece aims to capture the contrast between an inner spaciousness and an outer claustrophobia.

Vocal artist, composer & writer Shelley Hirsch has recorded elements of her current frequent practice: generating improvised text through vocalizing through a harmonizer in tandem with recordings of Morton Feldman pieces.

A deeply personal two-part recording, 9 a.m. (Eternal) simultaneously embraces both the inner & outer interiorities of Toussaint-Baptiste’s early morning life in Crown Heights, NYC, with mundane practices finding new significance against the neighborhood’s dramatically shifting acoustic and physical landscapes.

ISSUE is pleased to stream a cassette recording from Lary 7, the first project in the Isolated Field Recording Series. Lary has given ISSUE a cassette tape containing a room recording of his “droney tone” piece, an unrepeatable sound and light “rewind” piece.

ISSUE returns to the Flamboyán Theater at The Clemente in the Lower East Side to present American composer and musician Kali Malone, Puce Mary (Frederikke Hoffmeier) performing solo work, as well as Tongue Depressor, the New Haven-based duo project of multi-instrumentalists Zach Rowden and Henry Birdsey.

ISSUE and Abrons Arts Center are pleased to present Seasons in a Quasar, a new collaborative performance by Brooklyn-based vocalist & producer Embaci and South African via NYC artist Dasychira. Seasons in a Quasar is a dynamic show with references ranging from classic children's stories to Trinidadian folklore.

The Anagram Ensemble presents a program of original works and collaborations with composers Hunter Hunt-Hendrix and Viola Yip. This program highlights the diverse abilities of all five participants, who all contribute to this concert as both composers and performers.

ISSUE returns to the First Unitarian Congregational Society to present an expansive program of liberated sound featuring Peter Brötzmann’s trio outfit Full Blast with Marino Pliakas & Michael Wertmüller, as well as new solo work by John Wiese and Victoria Shen.

ISSUE presents electronic music pioneer Laurie Spiegel’s piece A Harmonic Algorithm 2011 in collaboration with Seth Cluett. First created through a computer algorithm coded by Spiegel, the piece is spatialized by Cluett. The evening also features Italian composer Caterina Barbieri for the first time at ISSUE.

ISSUE is pleased to present an evening of recent electroacoustic works from visionary composer, trombonist, and scholar George Lewis. At ISSUE, Lewis presents a “portrait concert” of four recent works performed by musicians Laura Cocks, Seth Parker Woods, Dana Jessen, Conrad Harris & Pauline Kim.

Sound artist Jacob Kirkegaard performs work from his Opus Mors series, displaying near-field sound recordings of a full autopsy. The evening also features musician Lyra Pramuk, performing the North American debut of material from her album Fountain. Entrance is free for ISSUE Members.

ISSUE presents the NY premiere of Always Already a new commissioned work by Ben Vida performed by renowned quartet Yarn/Wire, vocalist Nina Dante, and Vida himself. The evening also features the ISSUE debut of composer Aaron David Ross (ADR), presenting new compositions from his unreleased Filter Failure.

NOMADIC SIGNALS is a vessel for sonic performance operating in what Tawil refers to as the “diasporic imaginary."

With emotionality at the core of their compositional style, Andrews is known for expansive works which create massive cathedrals of sound.

ISSUE is pleased to premiere Orpheus Variations, a new composition by revolutionary American composer Alvin Lucier for solo cello, seven wind instruments & seven dancers. Written for and performed by cellist Charles Curtis and wind ensemble, the piece is staged featuring new choreography from Abigail Levine.

Marcia Bassett presents a new sound + light performance featuring projections sourced from digitized super 8mm film, liquid light experiments, and video feedback + color gel slide projections by Barry Weisblat. Kyle Eyre Clyd, the moniker of Alabama-based, interdisciplinary artist Kyle Kessler, also presents new work.

John McCowen presents compositions for solo contrabass clarinet for his inaugural performance as an Artist-In-Residence. These works present the concept of the instrument as an acoustic synthesizer. By sustaining multiple sounds simultaneously, the clarinet becomes a harmonic tube where sounds create beating harmonics.

ISSUE presents an audio/visual collaboration with interdisciplinary artists & curators Funneled Smoke, prolific composer Vito Ricci & vocalist Lise Vachon, and Philadelphia-based duo Pontiac Streator & Ulla Straus, with immersive 3-channel rear projection rig, live visuals & large-scale painting.

Just The Right Height, the music project of interdisciplinary artist Keke Hunt, and Drumloop, the recent moniker of artist and musician Daffy Scanlan, each present new solo work. Both artists chart critical new contexts at the intersection of fragmented narrative, sound design, pop music and experimental composition.

Composer & multi-instrumentalist John Krausbauer performs in collaboration with Tokyo-born composer Kaori Suzuki. Lary 7 performs a live version of his “droney tone” film piece, an unrepeatable sound & light “rewind” piece which borrows from the arcane technological worlds of film, light & sound mechanisms.

ISSUE opens its 2020 season with legendary electronic music innovator Moritz von Oswald, 2017 ISSUE Artist-In-Residence Antenes (Lori Napoleon), & American composer Britton Powell. At ISSUE, von Oswald presents Akklamation, a piece that sets out to unify the expansive musical paths of the electronics visionary.
